The VFW Patriot’s Pen essay contest encourages middle school students in grades 6-8 to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW. Each year, nearly 68,800 students in grades 6-8 enter this youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards.
The VFW Post 6192 Patriot’s Pen program is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students (2023-24 academic year) who live either in Washington Township or Westwood. Local prizes will be awarded as follows: 1st place - $300, 2nd place - $200, 3rd place - $100. The first-place winner will be eligible to compete for additional monetary awards at the regional, state, and national levels.
Each first-place state winner receives a minimum of $500. At the national level, the first-place winner wins $5,000! Before submitting your essay, read the rules and eligibility requirements.
